Many students do not have grandparents living or they do not live nearby to visit. It is good for the students and our residents to have interaction with one another. We have residents representing a wide range of past occupations such as Engineer that worked with NASA, WWII Veterans, Nurses, Accountants, Farmers, and Homemakers. They all share wisdom and long for interaction and want to feel that they still matter to someone outside of the Nursing Center. It is an emotionally uplifting experience for both student and resident. Our residents get a lot of joy having youthful visitors in the building. The student can interact with them and learn a great deal. Not everyone is fortunate enough to reach 100 years old, but we have several residents that are and some even older. They all have their memories, sharp-minded and witty. People of all ages can learn a lot from the elderly population.
Assist with scheduled group activities, assist with clerical duties, one-one visits with residents, lead and or develop an activity to lead, assist with pushing residents in wheelchairs to and from activities, assist with passing out books, cards etc. from the cheer cart and much more!
Fill out an application. We go over policies and procedures for the volunteers, as well as give a tour of the facility. If a background check is needed, we run those at no cost to the student. We only run the background check on students that plan to do 1-1 visits with the residents. If the students stay in the public areas, such as the lobby and activity room, we do not proceed with the background check.
We have Activity Assistants on duty 7 days a week and all holidays to include Christmas. Hours are typically 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. If students need to volunteer outside of these hours, the Activity Director will need to approve it.
