Program Information

The Literacy Alliance, originally known as Columbus Literate Community Program, has been a part of the Chattahoochee Valley community since 1990. It was through this organization, with tremendous community support and thousands of volunteer hours, that Columbus was named the first Certified Literate Community in the state by Georgia's Certified Literate Community Program (CLCP). Our programs reach a wide variety of people, but they are all focused on one message: increasing literacy levels.

Job Description

Volunteers would be helping with Kindergarten Readiness, Dictionary Project, office work, and events. Volunteers will interact with students, serve in the community, and gain organizational experience.
Volunteer Reading Buddies duties include interacting with pre-k students to build vocabulary. Tasks are reading and exploring a book together and then completing an academic activity that relates to that book.
Kindergarten Readiness selects Pre-K students whose literacy levels are well below the standard for their age. We organize the volunteers into teams to "adopt" two children to see each week. People generally volunteer one day a week for 8 weeks, this allows the children to be seen every school day for the 8-week session. The volunteers spend 15 to 20 minutes with a child reading a book together and then doing an academic activity that relates to that book.

Complete volunteer orientation and pass a criminal background check.
