Kindergarten Readiness is a program of Columbus Reads and The Literacy Alliance. This program selects Pre-K students whose literacy levels are well below the standard for their age.
We organize the volunteers into teams to “adopt” two children to see each week. People generally volunteer one day a week for 8 weeks, this allows the children to be seen every school day for the 8-week session. The volunteers spend 15 to 20 minutes with a child reading a book together and then doing an academic activity that relates to that book. Each Friday students are given that week's book and activity sheets to take home which gives them eight new scholastic books to share with their families.
Volunteers are needed to work in teams, which provide one-on-one time with at risk Pre-K students. They follow a simple curriculum that works to develop their vocabulary and create the desire to learn to read. Education majors are preferred.
Send an email with contact information to the email address provided above prior to the first week of September. If you have a preferred day you would like to volunteer, please let us know as early as possible. Volunteers must pass a criminal background check and participate in a 45-minute training session.
Commitment is a must. Our program is result driven, and it is vital that the children are paired with consistent volunteers.
One hour one morning a week, generally between 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m., depending on the location. There are generally two sessions: Fall and Spring.
